On five days, you sleep two nights in Moni and get two attempts at the lakes.
The standard sequence is Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, Ruteng to Bajawa, Bajawa to Moni via Ende, then the pre-dawn Kelimutu run, then either fly out of Ende or continue. Six days covers Labuan Bajo through Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende, Moni, and out at Maumere with a proper margin. Seven days lets you add Wae Rebo — and Wae Rebo genuinely needs its own day: the access road beyond Dintor to Denge demands a high-clearance 4×4, and the trek up to the cone houses takes roughly 2.5-3 hours each way on foot. You cannot bolt Wae Rebo onto a driving day.
The seven-day shape also opens Koka Beach, the ikat weaving villages near Sikka, and the Blue Stone Beach at Penggajawa without turning any single day into a marathon. Guests finishing at the coast normally take the Labuan Bajo to Maumere one-way and fly out of Frans Seda Airport.
What are the one-way drop-off implications?
Every one-way overland ends with a vehicle and driver several hundred kilometres from home. That repositioning is real cost — typically a full day of driving back plus fuel and the driver’s overnight — and it appears as a one-way surcharge on any honest quote. Three practical consequences:
- One-way to Ende or Maumere always costs more than a return loop of the same length. If budget is the binding constraint, a Bajawa loop back to Labuan Bajo is the efficient choice.
- Confirm the drop-off point before you book, not during the trip. Changing the end city mid-route changes the repositioning distance and the price.
- Book earlier for June through September. Overland-capable vehicles in Labuan Bajo are a limited fleet, and peak season commits them weeks ahead. As of 2026, high-clearance 4×4 units for the Wae Rebo road are the first category to sell out.
Which vehicle, and with a driver?
