A Labuan Bajo city tour by car is a private half-day loop with driver and fuel covering Batu Cermin cave in the morning light, the harbour and town, and a hill viewpoint for sunset. The standard version runs about 5 hours; a 12-hour version adds the Rangko area and Melo village. As of 2026 we quote it per vehicle in USD, so two people and six people pay the same for the same car.
Car Rental Labuan Bajo has run this route since 2015, operated under Komodo Luxury, with drivers who live here and know which viewpoint is clear at which hour.
What does the half-day city tour by car cover?
The 5-hour loop is built around light, not distance. Mornings belong to the cave, late afternoon to the hills, and the drives between stops are short.
- Batu Cermin cave (morning). The “mirror stone” cave sits about 15 minutes from town. Between roughly 09:00 and 11:00 the sun angle throws light onto the limestone, which is the reason to go early. A site guide is compulsory and paid at the entrance; wear covered shoes.
- Bukit Cinta. A short climb off the Trans-Flores road, roughly 20 minutes out, with a clean line over the bay and the near islands — the wide shot most people came for.
- Sylvia Hill for sunset. The ridge above town, about 10 minutes from the harbour, is the dependable late-afternoon stop and the finish on the afternoon half day.
- Harbour, fish market and town. The pier and boat lineup, Kampung Ujung food street in the evening, plus a coffee or souvenir stop.
Rangko and Melo village: what fits and what does not
Both are requested constantly and both need honest scheduling. The Rangko area is 60 to 75 minutes each way on the north road, plus a short local boat hop for the saltwater cave pool. That does not fit inside 5 hours with anything else attached, so we build either a Rangko-focused half day or the 12-hour version. Melo village is around 40 minutes uphill toward Ruteng, and the Caci whip dance there is not a daily scheduled show: it is arranged in advance with the village and carries a separate community contribution. Ask two or three days ahead and we will confirm whether the village can host your date, rather than promise it blind.
5 hours or 12 hours: which version should you book?
| Version | Duration | Typical route | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half-day city loop | 5 hours | Batu Cermin, Bukit Cinta, Sylvia Hill, harbour, town | Arrival day or post-liveaboard day |
| Extended city and coast | 8 hours | Half-day loop plus Rangko or Melo village | One free day, one big add-on |
| Full day, city and highlands | 12 hours | Cave, Melo, Rangko, optional Cunca Wulang, sunset | Only one land day in Flores |
If your Komodo boat docks at midday, the 5-hour afternoon version usually beats the full day: you will be tired, and the light is better anyway.
Is there an EV option for the city tour?
Yes, for the in-town loop only. As of 2026 Labuan Bajo has public charging in town plus a growing number of hotel-side chargers — enough for a 5-hour city radius, but not for Rangko, Melo or anything toward Ruteng. So the EV runs the half-day city version while petrol and diesel vehicles cover highland routes. Say “EV” when you enquire: we hold a limited number and they go first in high season.
Which vehicle suits your group?
- Compact MPV (Avanza or Xenia class) — up to 4 with light bags; the economical city choice.
- Innova Reborn or Zenix — up to 5; the comfortable default on Labuan Bajo’s steep, uneven town roads.
- Hiace Commuter — up to 12, so a group shares one vehicle cost.
- Hiace Premio or Alphard class — up to 8 in a quieter, higher-spec cabin.
- EV sedan or compact SUV — city loop only, subject to availability.
Longer routes beyond the city radius run through our Flores overland package, and the same fleet is available on a plain daily basis via car rental with driver.
How do you book it?
- 1. Send dates and group size on WhatsApp, with your hotel name or the pier you will be standing at.
- 2. We propose a route and timing around your flight or boat schedule, and say honestly what will not fit.
- 3. You receive a written quote in USD per vehicle, listing what is included and what is not.
- 4. Confirm, and the driver contacts you the evening before with his name, plate number and pickup time.
Same-day requests are often possible outside the July-August and December peaks, but a day of notice gets a better driver-and-vehicle match.

Pricing disclaimer: these are indicative planning figures, not a fixed tariff. Entrance tickets, the cave guide fee, parking, the Rangko boat hop, the Melo contribution and meals are quoted separately. Wider ranges sit on our car rental price list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do the city tour on my arrival day?
Yes, and it is the most common way people use it. Flights into Komodo Airport mostly land before noon, so an afternoon 5-hour loop finishing at Sylvia Hill for sunset works cleanly. See Labuan Bajo airport transfer if you want the terminal pickup priced separately.
Is a guide included, or just a driver?
The quote covers a driver with conversational English who knows the routes and timings. He is not a licensed interpreting guide. If you want a dedicated English, German, Mandarin or Spanish-speaking guide, tell us when you enquire and we will price it as an add-on rather than pretend the driver covers it.
What happens if it rains?
Between roughly December and March, afternoon rain is normal and hill viewpoints can close in completely. We reorder the stops on the day, taking Batu Cermin, the harbour and town first and holding the viewpoint until a clear window appears. No charge for reordering.
Can you handle luggage or a large group?
Yes. A Hiace Commuter seats 12 but carries far fewer once dive bags and large cases are loaded, so give us the real luggage count and we will size the vehicle or add a second car.
